As an adult continuing education student I find a lot of this book painful. Using a mind map to somehow flesh out my life when I'm used to using them for brainstorming and book ideas feels very alien.

Generally, if a student can't explain what their degree is in, there was a mistake made well before this book came into the picture. The articles are entertaining, but an entire section on metaphor and the use of metaphor has me wondering how anyone can effectively learn how to use metaphor from a book. Not the worst book I've ever had to use for a class, but certainly not the best.
I am reading this for the Interdisciplinary Studies (IDS) course I am developing. It has about 40 pages of unique text at the beginning and then is filled with articles to apply to the concepts. I suppose this would be good for those afraid of the library, or for a few years back when library research was best left to librarians, research assistants, and journal authors. However, in the world where EBSCOhost, ProQuest, Sage, and Gale are all online, the bulk of the need for this text is now moot I am reading this for the Interdisciplinary Studies (IDS) course I am developing.

Author by: Tanya Augsburg Language: en Publisher by: McFarland Format Available: PDF, ePub, Mobi Total Read: 66 Total Download: 770 File Size: 42,5 Mb Description: This collection of essays first highlights the popularity of interdisciplinary undergraduate studies and their recent gains in the world of higher education, and then addresses the paradoxical failure of these studies to achieve a permanent position in the curricula of individual universities and colleges.
This question and its attendant issues are explored in three ways: (1) an overview of how these changes are affected by the political economy, (2) case studies from actual universities and colleges, and (3) a discussion of the sustainability of undergraduate interdisciplinary studies programs. Author by: Susan Mendus Language: en Publisher by: Routledge Format Available: PDF, ePub, Mobi Total Read: 74 Total Download: 906 File Size: 45,7 Mb Description: Sexuality and Subordination uses the insights of a range of disciplines to examine the construction of gender in nineteenth-century Britain and France. With contributions from history, literature, sociology and philosophy, its interdisciplinary approach demonstrates the extent to which a common focus can illuminate problems inaccessible to any single discipline. 'Victorianism' is generally understood to mean sexual double standards, hypocrisy and prudery among the middle classes. But, as this collection shows, the representation of sexuality in the nineteenth century was more diverse and complex than is sometimes realized. Both art and literature point to the deployment of sexual metaphors and imagery, and the language of educated public opinion was shaped by the dichotomy between mind and matter, between rationality and sexuality.
The contributors to this volume explore how women, in questioning their subordination, had to challenge a construction of femininity which imposed sexual ignorance. Author by: Jacob A. Belzen Language: en Publisher by: Rodopi Format Available: PDF, ePub, Mobi Total Read: 43 Total Download: 616 File Size: 41,8 Mb Description: Psychology of religion is one of the rare fields in psychology where an interdisciplinary approach has been preserved. Psychohistory especially, understood as the systematic application of psychological knowledge in explorations of the past, has enjoyed substantial attention. Traditionally, the emphasis in such studies has been on biographical research. This volume attempts to broaden the horizon and to include studies of phenomena as well on a group or subcultural level. The volume contains chapters on such subjects as apparitions of the Virgin Mary in Belgium, attitudes towards suicide in seventeenth-century Sweden, the pillarization of Dutch Calvinists.
There are also studies of famous individuals such as Hitler, Stalin, Freud, Van Gogh and J.H. Among the contributors are well-known authors like Donald Capps, Michael P. Carroll, William W.

Louwerse Language: en Publisher by: John Benjamins Publishing Format Available: PDF, ePub, Mobi Total Read: 69 Total Download: 255 File Size: 40,8 Mb Description: Themes play a central role in our everyday communication: we have to know what a text is about in order to understand it.
Intended meaning cannot be understood without some knowledge of the underlying theme. This book helps to define the concept of ‘themes’ in texts and how they are structured in language use. Much of the literature on Thematics is scattered over different disciplines (literature, psychology, linguistics, cognitive science), which this detailed collection pulls together in one coherent overview.
The result is a new landmark for the study and understanding of themes in their everyday manifestation.
